Consumers are increasingly concerned about environmental issues such as energy conservation and the preservation of natural resources. Many families are taking steps – such as recycling, purchasing locally-grown vegetables, reducing fuel consumption, among others – to reduce their impact on the environment.
Because consumer values and lifestyles are reflected in their attitudes and decision-making about products and services in the marketplace – including their approach to death and funerals – interest in natural funeral and burial options will likely increase.
According to the 2017 NFDA Consumer Awareness and Preferences Survey, 53.8 percent of respondents indicated an interest in exploring green funeral services. In response to these trends, funeral directors have begun exploring ways they can meet the service needs of these families through practices that include offering green services, products, and funeral package options.
