retired funeral director, Jasin Funeral Home, Toledo, Ohio, died August 8, 2023, at age 78. Van Horn worked more than 36 years for the former David R. Jasin Funeral Home, retiring in 2007. He was a 50-year member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, where he served on the board of directors for 10 years and was past president 2004-05. He was also an OFDA Mortuary Response Team member since 1990 and was activated during the 9/11 attack. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Harbor Light Lodge 746 FFAM.

Van Horn is survived by wife Margaret, sons Shawn and Evan, six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

retired funeral director, past president of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association and father of Robert Rue, funeral director at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home, Springfield, died July 13, 2023, at age 79.

licensed funeral director and owner, The House of Johnson Funeral Home, Detroit, Michigan, died July 31, 2023, at age 68. Johnson studied architecture at Syracuse University before graduating from Wayne State University’s mortuary science program. He worked at Stinson Funeral Home in Detroit as manager of the embalming operation, where he honed his skills. In 1983, he launched his own embalming service and provided service to various funeral homes in the metropolitan area. His motto: “If he has the snap of a finger to work with, the casket will be open.”

Johnson is survived by wife Cheryl; children Emmanuel, David, Mercedes and Dominique, a licensed funeral director with The House of Johnson Funeral Homes; three grandchildren; sisters Elizabeth and Louella; and brother John.

funeral director and former owner, Minton-Chatwell Funeral Homes, Borger, Texas, died August 14, 2023, at age 84. At 14, Chatwell went to work for A.M. Minton, founder of Minton Funeral Home and Flowers. He later graduated from Dallas Institute of Funeral Service and, after returning to Borger, completed his apprenticeship under Mr. Minton.

After Minton’s death, Chatwell managed the funeral home and some years later bought it from Cleo Minton and later, Westlawn Memorial Park. In 1987, Chatwell built a branch funeral home in Fritch, and in 1988, he bought the funeral home in Panhandle. Chatwell received the Ed C. Smith outstanding funeral director and his 50- and 60-year funeral director awards.

Chatwell was very active in the Borger Jaycees, serving in leadership and on several committees. He served as neighborhood commissioner for the Boy Scouts, on the board of directors for Hutchinson County Mentally Retarded Association and was director and president of the Panhandle Funeral Directors Association. He was a Mason and a member of the Borger Elks.

Chatwell is survived by wife Linda, sons J.L. and Steve, daughters Carrie and Robin, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

retired funeral director and former president and CEO of Sullivan Funeral Home, Marshall, Texas, died June 11, 2023, at age 94. Sullivan attended the College of Marshall, North Texas State University and Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science; he served in the U.S. Army medical division during the Korean War.

Sullivan was a third-generation funeral director who served as president and CEO of Sullivan Funeral Home, Sullivan-Austin Street, Sullivan Life Insurance Company, Sullivan Monument Company, Colonial Gardens and Algoma cemeteries, and was part-owner of Marshall Floral Company. He was a member of NFDA, National Selected Morticians and Order of the Golden Rule. He also served as past president of the East Texas Funeral Directors Association and as a former board member with the Texas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association.

Active in the Marshall community his entire life, Sullivan was a member and former president of Marshall Rotary Club, a director of Marshall Chamber of Commerce, Harrison County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Harrison County Historical Society. He was a 32nd degree master mason and a member of Marshall Masonic Lodge No. 22 AF&AM, as well as Dallas Scottish Rite, Gray Commandry of the York Rite and Sharon Temple. As a member of Sharon Temple, he served as president of Harrison County Crippled Children’s Association. He also was a member of IOOF Lodge, American Legion, Club 25 and Sons of the Republic of Texas. He was a director of both First Federal Savings and Loan Association and First National Bank of Marshall.

He is survived by daughters Sherry and Cindy, three grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

retired funeral director, Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Homes, Worthington, Ohio, died June 11, 2023, at age 73. Smith attended Kent State and Cleveland State universities. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Germany before returning home to continue his education. During high school and the years following, Smith began his career at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home.

After graduating from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Smith served for more than 40 years at a family-owned funeral home in Columbus, and he served most recently at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Homes & Crematories in Worthington before retiring due to health issues. He served his community as a member and past commander of American Legion Post 82, member and past president of Clintonville Area Chamber of Commerce and as president of the Clintonville Fourth of July Inc. celebrations for many years. Smith was also a member of The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and was a Clintonville Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year.

He is survived by wife Jennifer; sons Adam and Matthew; brothers Robert, owner and funeral director, Lebold-Smith Funeral Home in Bolivar, and Jeffrey, funeral director at Smith-Varns Funeral Home, Sugarcreek; and sister Kim.

funeral director, Terpening & Son Mortuary, Artesia, New Mexico, died April 18, 2023, at age 52. McIntire began his career working with his dad in the family-owned funeral home. He was a funeral director for 31 years and received his associate degree from Mount Hood Community College in Oregon.

In his move to southern California and working in funeral service there, McIntire was instrumental in establishing the Unforgettables Foundation and Garden of Angels. In New Mexico, he served as interim president of the New Mexico Funeral Service Association Board. In 2021, McIntire moved into the position of area/regional manager over the seven funeral homes in New Mexico for Legacy Funeral Group.

He is survived by wife Rochelle, son Brent, daughters Cierra and Ashlyn, mother Connie; stepmother Marlene and sister Tera.

retired funeral director and former owner, Lendman-Hansen Funeral Home, Kenosha, Wisconsin, died June 19, 2023, at age 87. During his school years at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, from which he graduated, he worked at a funeral home answering phones at night, which was his introduction to funeral service. Lendman also served his country with the U.S. Army.

In 1979, after working in a number of funeral homes in Kenosha, he purchased Mischler’s Home for Funerals, which became Lendman-Mischler Funeral Home. Later, it became Lendman-Hansen. He was a member of Kenosha Elks Club, Kenosha Kiwanis Club, Goodfellows Club, Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association and NFDA.

He is survived by children Susan, David, Mary, Jane and Daniel; stepchildren Tracy and Scot; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

retired funeral director, Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, Ohio, died June 29, 2023, at age 82. Hebblethwaite, a U.S. Army veteran, attended Bowling Green State University and was a graduate of Cincinnati Mortuary College. He worked at Thompson Funeral Home, owned and operated Hebblethwaite Funeral Home in Hicksville and worked as a funeral director at Heinlein-Brown from 1982 until his retirement in 2006. Hebblethwaite served as treasurer of Murray City Monument Company and was a member of the City of Logan Zoning Board. He is survived by wife Kay; children Michael, Carla, Steven, Nancy and Johanna; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

retired funeral director and former owner, Citty Funeral Home, Reidsville, North Carolina, died July 8, 2023, at age 93. Citty and brothers Price and Robert owned and operated Citty Funeral Home, where Judson was president. He worked there for 69 years, until age 91, making him one of the oldest active funeral directors in North Carolina.

Following the deaths of his brothers, Citty and son Russell, nephew Bruce and great-nephew Robert III, operated and managed the funeral home until Citty’s retirement in 2020.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany after World War II; a retired volunteer ­firefighter with the City of Reidsville, with 27 years of service; and a former member of Reidsville Lions Club. ­Citty served as chairman of the Cemetery Committee at Speedwell Presbyterian Church until his health declined and on numerous other committees over the years.

He is survived by wife Betty, son Russell L. “Rusty,” daughter Tina, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, brother Hugh, special nephew Bruce and special great-nephew Robbie, both of whom he worked with at the funeral home for many years.
